Avalanche

Category:
Demonstration

In this hands-on activity from the website of the popular PBS series NOVA, students simulate different snow pack and terrains using flour, sugar, and potato flakes on a foam core board. They tilt the board, measure the angles at which "avalanches" begin to occur, and make observations and inferences.

Curriculum Notes

This demo is usually performed in the "Chemistry of Skiing" course. This demo must be performed outside, preferably under cover. We have enough materials for up to eight student stations. Allow 30 minutes to complete this hands-on activity.

Three days of lead time is required for this project.

Procedure
